What makes your oilseed products organic?

Our organic vegetable oils and feed ingredients are produced exclusively from USDA certified organic seeds, including soybeans, canola seed, and sunflower seed. Organic seeds must be grown without synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, or GMOs, and must be certified Organic by a USDA approved accredited body. The seeds at our facility are then mechanically extruded and pressed without the use of any additional ingredients or processing aids.

Do you offer organic and non-GMO products?

Yes, we offer both Organic and non-GMO products. All of our Organic products are also certified as non-GMO.

What is the difference between Organic and non-GMO soybeans?

Organic soybeans must adhere to the standards of the USDA National Organic Program (NOP), which prohibit synthetic fertilizers, pesticides, and GMOs, and must be grown on ground that is certified organic. Non-GMO soybeans must grow from non-GMO seeds, but do not have the fertilizer or pesticide limitations of the NOP. In short, all seeds meeting the Organic certification will be non-GMO, but non-GMO seeds are not Organic.

How is your soybean meal different?

Our soybean meal is expeller pressed, which means it is separated from the seed mechanically rather than chemically. Because expeller pressing is not as efficient as chemicals to remove oil from the meal, there is residual oil remaining in the meal that will provide natural vegetarian energy to animal diets. The residual oil will eliminate the need to add a fat supplement to the diet, which simplifies ingredient management and will improve performance to reduce the cost of feed.

What is the USDA Process Verified certification?

Boyd is the only facility in the world to receive USDA Process Verified certification as a hexane free oilseed processor. Oilseeds are critical to the food chain because they contain large amounts of vegetable oil and protein, a fundamental component to our food system. The oil must be separated from the protein for use as a food product, and the industry standard to complete this step is solvent extraction. Solvent extraction involves immersing soybeans in a bath of hexane to chemically separate the oil, which is then refined for human consumption, while the meal is dried and cooked to remove the solvent in preparation for animal consumption. This method of extraction strips the seed of its natural nutritional qualities, introduces trace amounts of hexane into the food system, and generates significant environmental pollution. Our certification as a hexane free facility states our intent to process oilseeds responsibly and better serve people, animals, and our environment.
